10 Tips for dry skin

Sharing is caring!

Are you struggling with dry skin? Well, this article is for you.

I know dry skin can be really annoying. There are actually a lot of products for dry skin in the market.

But sometimes it’s not about the products when it comes to skincare routine; it’s also about your habit.

Good habits can help your skin getting better and also make products work better.

So, here are 10 tips that you need to add to your skincare routine to help your dry skin.

1. Avoid using products with alcohol and fragrances

There’re many types of alcohol. Some of them are good, like Cetearyl alcohol, and they have many benefits for your skin.

But there’s also some bad alcohol like denatured alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, or SD alcohol. You may be wondering why are they in some products if it’s bad for your skin?

They do have some benefits such as making a product feel lighter, helping to absorb quicker, and sometimes also they are used as preservatives.

BUT the biggest issue with bad alcohol is that they can dry your skin and damage your skin’s barrier, which you want to avoid if you have dry skin.

You also should avoid fragrances, especially if you have sensitive skin. Some people tend to have some irritation from then, and it can damage your skin’s barrier.

If you’re currently using products with bad alcohol and fragrances, you should try some products without them. Avoiding them can be helpful if you have dry skin.

2. Apply your moisturizer on damp skin

Many people don’t know this, but one of the best ways to lock in the hydration into your skin is to apply your moisturizer on damp skin.

There are many reasons why applying moisturizers on damp skin instead of dry skin is better. The first benefit is that the product will absorb better on damp skin.

Another benefit is that it will make sure to trap the water into your skin. This is important if you use products that have a lot of humectants, especially if you live in a dry climate.

If you have dry skin and the humidity levels are low, the humectants may not find water to trap into your skin, so they may draw the moisture from your skin and make your skin dryer.

Humectants need water to work the best; they are excellent to hydrate your skin when using them the right way.

So, adding moisturizers or products with a lot of humectants on damp skin will hydrate your skin way better.

3. Exfoliate your skin

Exfoliating your skin is so important, especially the older you get. You need to get rid of your dead skin. There are so many benefits to exfoliate your skin, such as helping products to penetrate better, even skin tone, and help with skin texture.

But be careful because there are different ways to exfoliate your skin. One of them is using scrubs, which you should avoid, especially in your face.

Because some exfoliating scrubs are too harsh and can damage your skin, which is something you want to avoid, especially if you have dry skin and sensitive skin.

Chemical exfoliants are a great way to exfoliate your skin. It can be more gentle than scrubs. Lactic acid and mandelic acid can be the right choice if you have dry skin.

Lactic acid is known to help improve skin texture, and it can also help with the hydration of your skin. So, it may be a great choice if you have dry skin.

If you’re new to chemical exfoliant and want to try one, mandelic acid can be a great choice because it is gentle and has many benefits for your skin.

It may help you to improve your skin texture, hyperpigmentation, and acne.

4. Use products with ceramides

Ceramides play a significant role in your skin barrier. People with dry skin tend to have compromised skin barrier.

When your skin barrier is damaged, some harmful factors like bacteria, toxins can penetrate your skin. And the other biggest issue is that the water is not able to stay in your skin.

So, your skin became drier, and you also have many other problems like redness, flakiness, and acne.

Now we naturally have ceramides in our skin. So you may be wondering why you should use a product with ceramides.

The thing is that because of many factors like aging, over-exfoliating, using cleansers that are too harsh, etc., can diminish ceramides and compromised your skin’s barrier.

Obviously, the ceramides in products are not the same as those naturally found in your skin, but they can help repair your skin’s barrier and trap the water into your skin.

5. Use a humidifier in your bedroom

A humidifier in your bedroom can be beneficial for your dry skin, especially during winter or in a dryer climate.

With high humidity, your skin is more hydrated because there is more water into the air, and it stays into your skin. But when the humidity is low, the water tends to evaporate from your skin, and so your skin is dryer.

A humidifier will raise the level of humidity and so there will be more water into the air, which will help your skin became more hydrated without adding any product in your skincare routine.

6. Use gentle cleanser

If you have dry skin, you don’t necessarily need to wash your face in the morning; you can use just water if you want.

But, at night, you need to clean all the dirt accumulated during the day, and you also need to wash your makeup and sunscreen.

You must find a gentle cleanser, so it doesn’t strip all the natural oil from your skin. Look for a cleanser that has some moisturizing ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and ceramides.

7. Use sunscreen every single day.

A lot of people don’t use sunscreen. And this is a huge mistake.

You can have the best skincare routine if you don’t use sunscreen that’s pointless. Sunscreens are essential if you want to have healthy skin.

Sunscreen will help you avoid so many skincare issues such as sun damage. It can also help you avoid having wrinkles earlier.

Another way it can be beneficial is if you have hyperpigmentation. If you’re trying to get rid of hyperpigmentation, you need to use sunscreen to get rid of it.

The sun can damage your skin barrier, and if it is damaged, you can have more issues with your skin, such as dryness.

So if you’re not using sunscreen, do it now.

8. Add oil and occlusive in your skincare routine

The issue with dry skin is it doesn’t produce enough sebum. And because of that, the skin has a hard time keeping the hydration into the skin.

One thing you can do to help your skin is that after applying your moisturizer, you can add oil to keep your skin hydrated.

If you have dry skin, argan oil (may not be suitable if you have acne-prone skin) can be a great choice as it is high in oleic acid.

Oils high in oleic acid tend to be thicker so it can help keep the hydration into your skin. And if your skin is very dry, you can also add an occlusive as the last step.

An occlusive will create a barrier and prevent water loss. There’re many different occlusive such as mineral oil, dimethicone, beeswax, and petrolatum.

Vaseline is an affordable one. My favorite occlusive is CeraVe Healing ointment because it also has other ingredients to help repair your skin’s barrier. Use it as the last step before going to bed, and believe me, you’ll wake up with soft skin.

9. Don’t use hot water

The good thing about using hot water is, it’s relaxing. But when it comes to your skin, well, there is no benefit, and contrary to the belief, hot water doesn’t even open your pores.

Hot water can worsen your skin. Your skin can become drier, your eczema can get worst, and it can also worsen your acne.

So no matter your skin type, you need to stop using hot water and start using cold water, which will be beneficial for your skin.

10. Add a hydrating toner

Now, when it comes to toner, some people think that they are all drying, and some believe that they do nothing for the skin.

Adding the right toner for your skin can make your products work better and help with some skin conditions. There’re so many different kinds of toners in the market. So no matter your skin type or conditions, you can find the right one.

If you have dry skin, you definitely should add a hydrating toner; this will help give more hydration to your skin and also help your product absorb better.

For me, those 10 tips are the most important when you have dry skin.
